Artists in California are using vape cartridges in their works to raise awareness for a sustainable future. We talked with costume designer Sheilagh McCafferty, whose bedazzled jackets are made using 150 LED dots from vape cartridges, the single-use e-cigarette devices now littering US beaches and hiking trails. California has classified used cartridges as hazardous waste, which has the negative effect of encouraging recycling business to steer clear of them. They usually get tossed out as litter or thrown into landfills, where an increase in fires has been blamed on their batteries.
